Brien Crothers – In the beginning
Brien grew up in rural northern California, where he still lives today. Growing up, his father loved a long country drive. Mom tolerated them. Even as the sun dangled low in the sky, Dad would say, “Let’s see what’s over the next rise,” or “We’ll turn back after we see what’s around the next bend.”
Back then and from the back seat of a huge ‘60s sedan, Brien was thrilled by his father’s wanderlust and curiosity.
During his senior year of high school, a school pal shared a travelogue written by his father. It was from a recent trip to Asia. Brien remembers it as only one page, but it was filled with exotic descriptions of a fantastic world with wonderful people and cultures unimagined by him before then.
That one travel adventure sat in Brien’s thoughts for the next twenty years, while he married, started a family, bought a home, and fostered a career.
Next stage
With his daughter grown and out on her own, and his work in management, Brien went back to that travelogue. He wished to take trips, have adventures, experience other cultures.
And one day it all came together: At a high school reunion, Brien ran into another friend. They got talking about life and hobbies and what they each wanted to do now their kids were out of the house.
This led to an expedition to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. But that was only the beginning.
Since the ’90s, Brien has climbed mountains in Africa, Russian, and the US, run across deserts in Morocco and Peru, Adventure raced in Vietnam, trekked in the Andes and the Himalayas, and walked thousands of kilometers in Europe.
Writing
It all started with a journal Brien wrote when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and went on photo safaris in the Serengeti. Since then, Brien has written about his travels and published some of the more useful information for others to enjoy.
Now, Brien focuses on more travel opportunities, meeting amazing people, listening to their stories, having his own experiences, and blending those into travel adventure stories and novels for young people and the young at heart.
Inspiring
Brien’s one true hope is to inspire young people to expand their worldview, gain perspective, and make this world a better place.
